About The Musical: |
I created the music of Show –n- Tell in 1992 out of the necessity for clean, hip, music for children. As a choreographer and guru of dance to young people across the country, it became harder and harder to find age appropriate music that was not “hokey and square”. Kids are much smarter than we think. They do not want to be talked down to and they can certainly understand more than we sometimes want them to. I wrote the songs over a few weeks time during my travels and auditioned young singers to be a part of this journey. Without a record label, we recorded the songs and had them printed on our own yellow cassette tapes. (Remember cassettes?)
After a few months, we got word that it was being played on the Kids charts in Minneapolis and topping the charts above Disney recordings and other popular kids songs. The song, DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS went to #1 and ABC’s went to #5. I was excited but where do I go from there? After many years doing Broadway shows on the road I kept coming back to this timeless recording of Show –n- Tell. How do I get this music to kids? After producing and directing other people’s musicals, I knew that I had the goods to do bring together my 2 favorite things, this recording and Theater. I had such a great time writing this piece while focusing on the fun side of school. I have always enjoyed school. I went to a public school but turned it into my own “Performing Arts Center”. I would sing and dance all over the school and put on major productions on playground. The main character, Vivian, gets her first name from my mother, and her last name, Loraine, from my favorite aunt. I wanted this to be a piece about kids, for kids. I feel they should see themselves when they come to the theatre, no matter how different they are. |
